SuperFluids™
SuperFluids™ are based on advanced liquid-liquid technology using supercritical or near-critical fluids. These fluids are gases at ambient temperature and pressure conditions. As shown in the attached figure, a pure component compound enters its supercritical fluid region at conditions which equal or exceed both its critical temperature and critical pressure. These parameters are intrinsic thermodynamic properties of all stable pure component compounds. Carbon dioxide, for example, becomes supercritical at conditions equal to or exceeding 31° C and 1,050 psig. In these supercritical or near-critical fluid regions, normally gaseous substances such as carbon dioxide become dense phase fluids, which exhibit greatly enhanced solvating power. At a pressure of 3,000 psig and a temperature of 40 ° C, carbon dioxide has a density around 0.8 g/cc and behaves very much like hexane, a very nonpolar organic solvent since carbon dioxide has a dipole moment of zero debyes.

Aphios Corporation Granted United States Patent for Fractionation of Biologically-Derived Materials
Woburn, Mass. — June 03, 2003 — Aphios Corporation was granted United States Patent No. 6,569,640 on May 27, 2003 for Method for Fractionation of Biologically-Derived Materials.
In the fractionation process, supercritical and near-critical fluids with/without cosolvents (SuperFluids™) are first used to remove extracellular compounds from biologically-derived materials such as microbial, viral and terrestrial plant cells and then to disrupt these cells. The disrupted cells are then step-wise extracted with increasingly polar SuperFluids™ solvents to rapidly fractionate and isolate the intracellular constituents into partially purified, polarity-guided fractions.

Aphios Corporation Granted United States Patent for Drug Manufacturing Process - Rapidly and Selectively Manufactures Truly "Green" Medicines
Woburn, Mass. — June 29, 1999 — Aphios Corporation has been granted United States Patent No. 5,750,709, entitled "Method and Apparatus for Isolating Therapeutic Compositions from Source Materials," which is now available for licensing.
The patented process utilizes supercritical, critical or near-critical fluids with/without cosolvents (SuperFluids™) for the selective and rapid manufacturing of natural medicines (pharmaceuticals and nutraceuticals). SuperFluids™ are normally gases which, when compressed, exhibit enhanced solvation, penetration, expansion and disruption properties. These fluids can improve the isolation of natural medicines by a factor of 1,000 to 10,000 in times as low as 40 minutes in the laboratory to a nominal 4 hours per batch for large-scale processing in Aphios’ SuperFluids™ critical fluid extraction and purification (CXP) process.
